What it is
An A program you use, such as the browser, Mail or a game. is a program you use: the browser, Mail, Music, a game. WolOS comes with the apps most people need on the first day, all in the The row of app icons at the bottom of the screen. Click an icon to open the app; a dot under it means the app is running.:
| App | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Files | Your documents, pictures, downloads and USB sticks. See Files and folders. |
| Apps | A list of every app on the computer, with search. |
| Browser | The web. Websites you use every day can become apps of their own; see Web apps. |
| Email from any provider. | |
| Music | Your songs and albums. |
| Photos | Your pictures, sorted by date. |
| Calendar | Appointments and reminders. |
| Notes | Short notes and lists. |
| Terminal | Typing commands; see What a terminal is. |
| App Store | More apps; see The Store. |
| System Settings | Everything you can change; see System Settings. |
Text Editor, a calculator in Search and more are found with Search (Super+Space).
Why WolOS does it this way
The apps in the Dock are ones that do their job well and look like the rest of the desktop, so the first day needs no shopping. Anything else is one click away in the Store, and every app you add can be removed again just as easily.
How
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Open an app | Click it in the Dock, or press Super+Space, type the first letters of its name and press Return. |
| See every app | Click Apps in the Dock. |
| Switch to another open app | Super+Tab, or click its icon in the Dock (a dot under it means it is running). |
| Quit an app | Super+Q, or the app's menu in the menu bar > Quit. |
| Close one window | Super+W, or the rightmost round button of the window. |
| Stop an app that does not respond | Alt+Super+Esc > choose it > Force Quit. |
| Add an app | The App Store; see The Store. |
| Remove an app | Its page in the App Store > Remove. Your own files made with it stay. |
| Open an app when you log in | System Settings > General > Login Items: "Apps that open when you log in." |
Each app's menus
While an app is in front, its name and menus are at the top left of the : for example File, Edit, View, Window. The same keys work in every app: Super+C copies, Super+V pastes, Super+Z undoes, Super+S saves, Super+F finds, Super+N opens a new window and Super+T a new tab.
A worked example
Alice wants Mail to open every morning when she logs in. She opens System Settings > General > Login Items, adds Mail, and the next day her inbox is waiting when she signs in. She tried a drawing app from the Store and did not like it; on its Store page she clicks Remove, and it is gone from Search and the Dock.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| An app does not open | Wait a few seconds: the first start of a big app takes longer. Then try again from Search. |
| "Not Checked Yet" | WolOS checks a new program the first time it runs. Open it again in a moment. |
| An app does not respond | Alt+Super+Esc > Force Quit. Unsaved work in it is lost. |
| An app is missing from the Dock | Open it from Search; the Dock shows it with a dot while it runs. |
| An app opens by itself at login | Remove it from System Settings > General > Login Items. |
